Let the decorating begin! I'm ringing in the season with a series on chinoiserie Christmas decorations, featuring over the next few days decor (trees, wreaths, garlands) and where to shop. Chinoiserie (shin-waz-er-ee) means Chinese-inspired or influenced, although it's often used as a general term for anything with an Asian sensibility.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Bronson Van Wyck decorated this sumptuous library in Manhattan for Christmas, as captured by <a href="https://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/van-wyck-new-york-christmas-slideshow#1" target="_blank">Architectural Digest.</a> The tree skirt is made of Chinese wedding silk.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The mantel, layered in cedar and custom-made red fans, is a stunning centerpiece for the room.</div>

The beautiful red theme is carried into the hall. How many poinsettia bushes did it take to create these fantastic garlands?! </div>

I placed in the top 10 a few years ago, and thought it would be fun to enter again, with my new apartment this time—albeit with little preparation, especially since I didn't learn about the contest until a day or two before! I didn't win, but it was fun to participate. Here's my latest home:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
LIVING ROOM</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the floor to ceiling windows here, and it's quite high, so I chose to bring the sky in with Benjamin Moore's Breath of Fresh Air, and the rest of the space is Benjamin Moore's Decorator's White. Sky and clouds! It has a wonderful effect in the daytime. The glass-legged desk and brass pulls are both from Amazon, and along with the Starck ghost chair, my workspace doesn't obstruct those views. An IKEA shelf and cabinet inserts with matching brass pulls create helpful book and art storage. The lavender poof was acquired on a trip to Morocco.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
DINING</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love this china cabinet, filled with travel mementos and vintage platters. The dining chairs are Ballard Designs; the Saarinen-like table is IKEA.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ToMW-5eGCFk/Xu7jovrqP4I/AAAAAAABKk4/gZinITYLhXkv3ouayO-uH6qB2JqgzgVkACK4BGAsYHg/s3918/IMG_1506.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3918" data-original-width="2971" height="781" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ToMW-5eGCFk/Xu7jovrqP4I/AAAAAAABKk4/gZinITYLhXkv3ouayO-uH6qB2JqgzgVkACK4BGAsYHg/w594-h781/IMG_1506.jpeg" width="594" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
LIVING ROOM</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A trusty eBay credenza, vintage store lamps, and family pieces round out the living space.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uVAPPj-oUdY/Xu6z2r60ZWI/AAAAAAABKkU/CiOw7T9r524iBW8-oGMkJ_pBntaSobwjgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/credenza.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uVAPPj-oUdY/Xu6z2r60ZWI/AAAAAAABKkU/CiOw7T9r524iBW8-oGMkJ_pBntaSobwjgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/credenza.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
BEDROOM</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was only able to paint the one accent wall, so the bedroom stayed bright white—vintage bamboo screens and a valence soften the effect a little. Almost all the furniture is from antique shops. The orange and white patterned fabric is by Vern Yip, and the throw is a Marrakesh find. A collection of brass pagodas found in Beijing rest on the desk (which doesn't fit the space, but I'm unwilling to part with it!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BJcxfk6vS9Q/Xu60J9Fq_DI/AAAAAAABKkc/CA1z-uszFgsooF5cklSSoGzUBN_VAPNdACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/bedroom.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BJcxfk6vS9Q/Xu60J9Fq_DI/AAAAAAABKkc/CA1z-uszFgsooF5cklSSoGzUBN_VAPNdACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/bedroom.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
BATH</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A bit of black and white glam dresses up the bath, which includes towels by Nate Berkus and vintage boxes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Her home just radiated with old-fashioned hospitality and warmth—the very furnishings seemed to say, "stay a while." Others agreed—her home was featured in <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/home/how-a-family-made-a-1900-rowhouse-their-own-without-breaking-the-bank/2017/10/10/42a4fd18-a2fe-11e7-b14f-f41773cd5a14_story.html?utm_term=.7d30cf8c2f67" target="_blank">The Washington Post</a> earlier this year, and recently on <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/house-tour-a-new-traditional-100-year-old-dc-row-house-249758?utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=tracking&utm_campaign=pinterest-gallery-share#49" target="_blank">Apartment Therapy</a>. Below are a few highlights of her home tour, but be sure to click through to WaPo or AT for the full effect. Aside from cramming storage into every inch of this Capitol Hill row house, she's squeezed in plenty of charm, too!<br />

A few highlights:<br />
<br />
This Family Room, by Susan Nelson and Todd Martz of <a href="https://homeoncameron.com/" target="_blank">Home on Cameron</a>, was a splash of sunshine, calmed down by the liberal use of blues throughout. Large doses of white space on the moldings, built-in, and even the curtain hems, keep the party from getting too wild. Here's the official image, and a few iPhone shots of mine follow. I always love a good <a href="https://www.onekingslane.com/p/4685546-brush-stroke-table-lamp-blue-white.do?Wt.srch=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=search&utm_term=%7c&utm_content=Table+Lamps%7c%7cds_kid%7cs92700023464941598_dc%7cpcrid%7c196605017441%7cpkw%7c%7cpmt%7c&utm_campaign=OKLN_BT_GO_A0xxx_WA_G_PLAx_PRODUCT_NA&loc_physical_ms=1013052&MCID=PS_GO_PLA_Table+Lamps_Core&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5q3dnvHT1wIVnrXACh0EtQO1EAQYASABEgLiCfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds" target="_blank">Bunny Williams lamp</a>.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Blue was an accidental theme of the showhouse, with this library by Kelly Proxmire making the biggest blue hue statement—the dominate fabric is <a href="http://search.brunschwig.com/brunschwig-and-fils-print-green/br-70341.513-1328/iteminformation.aspx" target="_blank">La Portugaise by Brunschwig and Fils</a>. It seems so attainably simple, doesn't it? Balancing all those textures and layers requires a refined eye, but it doesn't feel decorated–and that's the magic, of course.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a terrible thing for green and blue these days - leaf and sky, tree and stream, it's a color combination that soothes. I went chartreuse in the living room earlier this year, and worried that bold, bold shock of green would knock me down every time I walked through the door. So the serenity of it surprised me - when the afternoon light comes sifting through the windows, it feels a bit like you're in a forest. I couldn't be happier. </div>

It's a palette getting its due in fashion. The Tory Burch fall collection included just. smashing. blue and white fabrics, with plenty of green plants sprinkled through the shoots - not all that different from her home in Southhampton, featured in <a href="https://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/tory-burch-takes-ad-inside-her-southampton-home#10" target="_blank">Architectural Digest</a>.<br />

The decor is very much a work in progress (note the one forlorn, coverless bolster) and sadly lacking in paint, but things are coming along, including the installation of a 104 inch valance over the sliding doors. And, I was able to graduate from <a href="http://sfair.blogspot.com.sanityfairblog.com/2012/12/oh-christmas-tree.html" style="text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">a tabletop tree</a> to a full six feet of faux-fir glory!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
The chinoiserie ornament collection has grown from a few odd bits into enough to cover an entire tree–new additions this year include blue and white vases from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and blue and white tassels from there as well, picked up at the China: Through the Looking Glass exhibit. </div>

The tree topper is a fan; the red lantern ornaments I found in a street market in Shanghai. They're actually meant to stick on the windshield of a car; I just switched out the suction cups for ornament hooks. It was... interesting, trying to get them back in the suitcase in one piece.</div>

I didn't plan on it, but after going through the lookbook, I thought a lot of the items were darling. Yes, I already had Lilly-but who doesn't want more? So, following a crazed middle of the night tug-of-war on my laptop, in which I managed to tear prized garments from the hands of other (invisible) online shoppers (and they snatched a few from me), I tossed the lot into my digital red Target cart, and pressed "order." And it all arrived in the mail today! As expected, what you get with a collaboration project with Target is better design than quality, but all-in-all, I still feel like I got more style than I paid for.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Below are most of the items I picked up. As with any post-Lilly shopping trip, I'm tempted to put them on all on at once, and walk down the street looking like someone who had a psychotic episode in a neon pant store.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1tJFa4jDN5Y/VTmk8uEJhNI/AAAAAAAAOpE/MF0kBdD8y_E/s1600/LillyPulitzerforTarget-Look19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1tJFa4jDN5Y/VTmk8uEJhNI/AAAAAAAAOpE/MF0kBdD8y_E/s1600/LillyPulitzerforTarget-Look19.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This bag is my favorite (also pictured above). Strangely, it's listed as a child's tote. The adult version had less attractive faux leather handles, while the child's has rope handles. It's a nice size, and I love the pattern.</div>

With far too many odds and ends that I couldn't bear to part with, I decided to forgo anything like a bedroom set, and instead find a way to make everything I already had and loved work together<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">—</span>with a few new additions. So welcome to "The Orangery."<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's really orange, red, amber, apricot... anything in that spectrum. That said, the colors still came out off in my photos<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px; text-align: left;">—</span>the valance isn't quite that red, nor the bedding so tan. The two-panel screen that formed my old headboard was too small to reuse for the same purpose, and so it now decorates a corner; a new Starck Louis ghost chair provides convenient seating, without taking up much visual space. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8h_idbM2d1Y/VSsOM3pRWBI/AAAAAAAAOlg/4mnnyp0jL6I/s1600/IMG_0141.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8h_idbM2d1Y/VSsOM3pRWBI/AAAAAAAAOlg/4mnnyp0jL6I/s1600/IMG_0141.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
My old desk has moved to the bedroom, graced with a former living room lamp. The gilt bamboo magazine rack is new. When not piled with books, the Chinese garden stool becomes a seat for the desk/vanity, fitting neatly in the small space.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cVdXAcO889M/VSsONNtGjiI/AAAAAAAAOlY/1m2vnktqmv8/s1600/IMG_0147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cVdXAcO889M/VSsONNtGjiI/AAAAAAAAOlY/1m2vnktqmv8/s1600/IMG_0147.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The gray Greek key pillow is new, from Target<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px; text-align: left;">—</span>what a find!<br />
The pillows are a Windsor Smith fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CCjgxnqqZi4/VSsOY9D4aSI/AAAAAAAAOnk/_GGG2ge72kE/s1600/IMG_0193.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CCjgxnqqZi4/VSsOY9D4aSI/AAAAAAAAOnk/_GGG2ge72kE/s1600/IMG_0193.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="text-align: center;">The headboard is actually two matching screens, with a sunburst hung in-between</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px; text-align: left;">—</span><span style="text-align: center;">I liked the drama!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The gold Foos are new, as is the little butterfly, an acquisition from the Philadelphia Flower Show (it perished of natural causes, according to the seller).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I love little boxes, and these two brass and black finds are particular favorites.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A favorite drawing in the "reading corner." The leopard pillow used to <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/121245414940214914/" target="_blank">live on the couch</a>. The folded screen has gone from a bright orange in the previous photo to an umber greige. Blame the iPhone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The brackets are a treasured vintage shop discovery. Home Goods supplied the matching vases.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
A very narrow corner gets a little dressing up with gilded frames, <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/121245414939512042/" target="_blank">formerly over my living room desk</a>. The pagoda is new<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px; text-align: left;">—</span>one of those things you find, get wildly excited over, buy, bring home, and think<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">—</span>what do I do with THIS? <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I like gray with orange<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px; text-align: left;">—</span>here, it softens the orange, and picks up the soft shadows in the print on the duvet and shams from West Elm. Luckily, the carpet was already grey, and I had the walls painted this Benjamin Moore shade before moving in. It has a cozy, cocoon effect<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 18.2000007629395px; text-align: left;">—</span>brightened up by gilt and orange.</div>

That's all, folks! The living room and dining area are still in desperate need of attention, but I thought I'd at least share a peek into the one mostly finished space, since I've gotten so many kind inquiries into how decorating post-move is going. Hope you enjoyed the tour!</div>

Virtually every shade they sell comes pre-aged in too-many-mixed-wash-cycles grey: mustard rather than sunshine yellow, brick red rather than lacquer, faded blue rather than blue sky. But today's Target shopping trip was pure delight-so many great finds! Apparently, they're eager for spring, too:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There's a nice Madeline Weinrib look to those pillows-and check out the pink and bamboo tray. I'm also a fan of the coral lamps in the background.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
These bamboo mirrored trays are fabulous! I almost bought one... almost, because despite my constant drumbeat about how great trays are for keeping spaces organized, you can also have TOO MANY TRAYS. Which is what I have. And I may have just bought another last week...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Chinese garden stools at the Target! Love the lattice pattern. They're a good deal at $69. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Matching vases and coasters are a smaller dose of Palm Beach vibe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
These "wicker bottom" trays were lovely in person, and the lattice mirror isn't bad either. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LBvYR8ngUo0/VGAn2f3tFkI/AAAAAAAAOgM/jpXL85BArRc/s1600/item4.rendition.slideshowVertical.bronson-van-wyck-holiday-apartment-05-library.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LBvYR8ngUo0/VGAn2f3tFkI/AAAAAAAAOgM/jpXL85BArRc/s1600/item4.rendition.slideshowVertical.bronson-van-wyck-holiday-apartment-05-library.jpg" height="640" width="492" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Bronson van Wyck draped the mantel of the above chinoiserie-paneled library in a Manhattan Duplex with custom-made fans, but you can tuck some of these fans from <a href="http://pearlriver.com/v3/product.asp?iPic=11537&iC=232" target="_blank">Pearl River</a> into fresh greenery. A longevity fan, below, with gold lettering would catch the Christmas candlelight beautifully.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x6etnNV4gvs/VGAqCauEt1I/AAAAAAAAOgk/himjwp2tubQ/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2014-11-09%2Bat%2B9.56.40%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x6etnNV4gvs/VGAqCauEt1I/AAAAAAAAOgk/himjwp2tubQ/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2014-11-09%2Bat%2B9.56.40%2BPM.png" height="474" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For a really elegant scheme, black and gold would be stunning and modern.</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kpRwZ34wgK4/VCi1dUg5CII/AAAAAAAAOe4/B0DMgAmo3MQ/s1600/IMG_5440.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kpRwZ34wgK4/VCi1dUg5CII/AAAAAAAAOe4/B0DMgAmo3MQ/s1600/IMG_5440.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
As summer came to a close, I headed down to Charlottesville for a quick weekend trip—and to Caspari, of course! I had a terrible time ripping myself away from this store, and didn't until I had stocked up on some of my Juliska pattern (which includes ginger jars!), books, hostess items, and a pile of other treasures. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Juliska Country Estate in blue and white ginger jars.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tCQ6RggpTS0/VCi0vFEksXI/AAAAAAAAOeQ/MNDTvLAsZNg/s1600/IMG_5428.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tCQ6RggpTS0/VCi0vFEksXI/AAAAAAAAOeQ/MNDTvLAsZNg/s1600/IMG_5428.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Caspari is chock-a-block with chinoiserie—this Dorothy Draper-style cabinet flanked by Gracie-esque panels is a prime example.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EKSEBr7DSiQ/VCi1-hQQPBI/AAAAAAAAOfY/nt3ZME_DF4g/s1600/IMG_5452.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EKSEBr7DSiQ/VCi1-hQQPBI/AAAAAAAAOfY/nt3ZME_DF4g/s1600/IMG_5452.jpg" height="640" width="626" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just in time for Fall, Caspari has plenty of orange. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A particular favorite of mine was this <a href="http://www.casparionline.com/Orange-Floral-Plate-Die-Cut-Placemat.html" target="_blank">floral die-cut placemat</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Green lattice and animal print make for a lovely spring setting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A few of the wrapping papers on hand—pagoda, monkeys, and the same pinwheel pattern as the placemats!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JBzsjp4N108/VCi1O2yoYOI/AAAAAAAAOeo/dm9eNSZLibk/s1600/IMG_5436.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JBzsjp4N108/VCi1O2yoYOI/AAAAAAAAOeo/dm9eNSZLibk/s1600/IMG_5436.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There were many small pieces of furniture for purchase, including garden stools.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I loved this display, especially seeing my rather traditional Country Estate pattern paired with an almost electric turquoise blue—very different, and very fun.</div>

And, all in 400 square feet! Check out this little box of big ideas.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I can never say no to a <a href="http://sfair.blogspot.com/2012/10/ambassador-for-green.html" target="_blank">blue and white plate wall</a>, and this apartment is loaded with chinoiserie charm.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BrnzGcWZvHI/U-65rNxRyzI/AAAAAAAANhc/HBPdYaD6he4/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2014-08-15%2Bat%2B9.51.57%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BrnzGcWZvHI/U-65rNxRyzI/AAAAAAAANhc/HBPdYaD6he4/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2014-08-15%2Bat%2B9.51.57%2BPM.png" height="532" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Alison, who has her own design firm, <a href="http://www.bakerballardinteriors.com/" target="_blank">Baker Ballard Interiors</a>, tackled this small space as a special challenge, and since she loves pattern, she kept it from being too outsized by going with a simple color scheme, and using the same ikat throughout the space to unify the different "zones."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TlvmJrkIGxg/U-60RuboYdI/AAAAAAAANgk/ySsC7FhUIOE/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2014-08-15%2Bat%2B9.16.15%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TlvmJrkIGxg/U-60RuboYdI/AAAAAAAANgk/ySsC7FhUIOE/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2014-08-15%2Bat%2B9.16.15%2BPM.png" height="344" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
More gorgeous ikat, and those x benches! If you look closely at the cabinet, you'll see Alison's TV, chicly tucked inside. Don't miss the bracketed foos on either side of the cabinet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Alison was lucky to find a studio with so much light and a wonderful balcony--with a very Park Avenue flair! </div>

I've been looking for a unique set of salt and pepper shakers for my dining room, so imagine how delighted I was to find these at Pier One, for $15.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
In fact, there was blue and white all around the store-these canisters were charming, and priced from $20 to $40. Check out the rest of the line below-if you're thinking of setting up a chinoiserie kitchen, you'll find most everything needed!</div>

And my new shift in real estate came with a balcony. Given that summer is here, and a small space is far less daunting than the pile of boxes operating in my apartment as mobile furniture, I tackled the balcony as my first decorating project.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The chair is from Pier One, and I just love it. It's mahogany, and the quality was surprisingly high for a Pier One piece. The chippendale back is charming, as are the details on the legs. The pillows and rug are from Home Goods, and the Chinese garden stool used to be a living room side table (let's hear it for indoor/outdoor!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uSTHwSQNyFo/U7BsHZaB1sI/AAAAAAAANdE/Z0VrxgCrcTQ/s1600/IMG_5190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uSTHwSQNyFo/U7BsHZaB1sI/AAAAAAAANdE/Z0VrxgCrcTQ/s1600/IMG_5190.jpg" height="640" width="520" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A detail of the chair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oiwMShkruKo/U7BsLzUwMeI/AAAAAAAANdU/oXR5mw23V6s/s1600/IMG_5192.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oiwMShkruKo/U7BsLzUwMeI/AAAAAAAANdU/oXR5mw23V6s/s1600/IMG_5192.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The matching pots are by Tahari Home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q1XfpuNW0Ys/U7Bs3fD1L1I/AAAAAAAANdk/wsmWiZzpgT4/s1600/IMG_5193.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q1XfpuNW0Ys/U7Bs3fD1L1I/AAAAAAAANdk/wsmWiZzpgT4/s1600/IMG_5193.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I pulled out some bamboo branches and florist wire from <a href="http://sfair.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-bamboo-christmas-tree.html" target="_blank">Christmas</a>, and created a trellis. The little jasmine plant will hopefully grow up it, and in the meantime, it helps camouflage an adjoining balcony. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C3RLfB6Joc8/U7BtsBZwVGI/AAAAAAAANeI/WRAXkiuzKQw/s1600/IMG_5205.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C3RLfB6Joc8/U7BtsBZwVGI/AAAAAAAANeI/WRAXkiuzKQw/s1600/IMG_5205.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
There's still space for a second chair, pulled out from the living room, to have a friend over and enjoy a cup of coffee and a sunset. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hEzw9pL-RXY/U7BtmifX35I/AAAAAAAANeA/jvuknCwDFcI/s1600/IMG_5210.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hEzw9pL-RXY/U7BtmifX35I/AAAAAAAANeA/jvuknCwDFcI/s1600/IMG_5210.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, <i>Smithsonian Magazine</i> has a <a href="http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-origin-story-balcony-180951755/?no-ist" target="_blank">fascinating piece </a>on the origin of the balcony, which began as a Medieval device of war for pouring cauldrons of hot oil on enemies, an activity now generally frowned upon by building management and home owners' associations.</div>

The web address is the same, but the physical address is not. While I'll miss my little studio apartment, I'm thrilled--THRILLED--to experience the first world joys that accompany a non-historic home on the Hill--special touches like dishwashers. Washer/dryers. Bedrooms. Bathrooms larger than a coat closet.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
But all the same, it's hard to say goodbye. I've found so much joy between these four very small walls, and a great deal of decorating pleasure. For three years, this was my own little experiment station for color and pattern, and it was grand fun.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One last before and after...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After. All moved out.</div>

Click through to read her highlights of shops in and around Eastern Market and the adjoining weekend flea, and start making your list<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', Helvetica, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">—</span>this is the time to dream about where you'll go and what you'll buy when spring finally breaks through!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Aside from shopping, Capitol Hill has some incredible interior design. This stunningly revamped row house was designed by architect <a href="http://www.thorsenconstruction.us/showcase/custom-homes-additions/Capitol%20Hill" target="_blank">Frederick Taylor</a>, and makes exquisite use of the often cramped spaces of the Hill's narrow homes. It was particularly clever to cede lawn space for an addition, then add further outdoor space on the second story and roof (hat tip to blog <a href="http://mynottinghill.blogspot.com/2013/10/a-capitol-hill-renovation.html" target="_blank">Notting Hill </a>for first highlighting this great place).</div>

<i><a href="http://www.housebeautiful.com/decorating/house-pictures/barry-dixon-washington-dc-row-house-0911#slide-2" target="_blank">House Beautiful </a></i>featured this very atypical, sassy Hill house designed by Barry Dixon. Of course I bought it. It's green. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Actually, it's not really meant to go here on the table--I just had a terrible case of Lamp Love in the Home Goods (Lamp Love is a serious medical condition, affecting millions of decor-attuned Americans, although my doctor keeps saying he hasn't heard of it. My accountant is equally ignorant). The emerald green with the grass green is not a great match, but I'll find another spot for it soon. It was just too fascinating a piece to pass up, and of course, it was only $49, and then it was only $40, when I found a small crack in the base and negotiated with the store manager.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j78_mvjV0QM/Uw6PTIBuj4I/AAAAAAAANY4/zqHfQu-smcU/s1600/IMG_4813.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j78_mvjV0QM/Uw6PTIBuj4I/AAAAAAAANY4/zqHfQu-smcU/s1600/IMG_4813.jpg" height="640" width="448" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Later, I did some digging online, and found the same lamp available at the <a href="http://www.lampstore.com/collections/contemporary-table-lamps/products/golden-tree-lamp-by-stylecraft-27478" target="_blank">Lamp Store for $120</a>. The base is just fantastic.</div>

They reminded me of a new set of table linens that World Market is carrying, and that, the previous week, I had sadly left behind in the store because, after considerable effort, I could not think of a justifiable reason for buying them.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I saw these prints, I knew exactly why I "had" to have the World Market linens. Hurrah! Six different Pottery Barn prints, $156 a piece, or $929 for the set. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's my version: World Market linens in <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20078050/" target="_blank">IKEA frames</a>, for $24 each (frames plus napkins), or $48 for the set. </div>

Unfortunately, I can't show them as a display, because I'm planning to hang them in my office, but you get the general idea. I went with white RIBBA frames from IKEA, instead of black, because I like an airer look. I'm crazy about the chevron ikat.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And look what happened--I ended up just buying them for my table, too. They're marvelous with the Juliska Country Estate pattern. I've started collecting the set due to family pressure (it's the South. You must have dayware and china patterns chosen for family and friends to gift you with over the holidays, and this is not optional). P.S. The placemats have a different pattern on each side, which is very fun.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose Country Estate because it's chinoiserie/British/blue and white awesomeness/has matching ginger jars. And, because it has a special place in my heart. I first discovered Isis Ceramics, of which Juliska's pattern is the mass-market version, when I was at Oxford. The little dish in the upper left hand corner is one of Isis' hand-painted scenes of the University. The little elephants are salt and pepper shakers, another World Market find.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Back to wall art. This is how I'll hang the set (propped up, as you can see). The rather crooked piece in the center is my attempt at framing a paper cut out I purchased in Shanghai. Plainly, I'm going to have to get a professional on the job, but it will play nicely with the ikat patterns.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have a mossy topiary that lives year round on a Chinese garden stool in my living room, but it was looking a touch summary for the season. After a brief hunt through my costume jewelry, I turned up enough brooches and pins to dress it up for the holidays, pinned them all into the moss, and voila!, a jeweled topiary. And now that I can see all of my pins in plain view, perhaps I'll remember to wear them...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the star-shaped brooch, center, but the tiny little turtle crawling away, upper left, is a darling.</div>

There are a few earrings in the mix too—a pair of starry studs, and even a dangler, lower left hand side. You could certainly make almost any piece of jewelry work—even necklaces could make a "tinsel" garland!</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This year, I have been visited by the Allergy Grinch. My allergies have been so terrible recently I've given up many beloved holiday traditions, including forcing paperwhites and other bulbs. But it hadn't occurred to me until Thanksgiving that I couldn't have a TREE. If you saw my Christmas tree posts in <a href="http://sfair.blogspot.com/2011/12/sanity-fair-decorates-for-christmas.html" target="_blank">2011</a> and<a href="http://sfair.blogspot.com/2012/12/oh-christmas-tree.html" target="_blank"> 2012</a>, you know I collect chinoiserie Christmas ornaments, and tracking down the odd (I'll admit, very odd) Asian-inspired Western-tradition object is one of my favorite obsessions. So what to DO with all of them this year? The first thing I thought of was inspired by the image of lanterns hanging at the end of slender bamboo poles--I could create a bamboo "bouquet," wiring ornaments to the end of each rod. When I shared this idea with friends and family, their natural response was: "Why don't you just get a fake tree?!?" Because, frankly, this totally obvious solution had not occurred to me. But it was too late. I was already off to the races, by which I mean the tropical plants aisle of Michael's; I had it all to myself, as the only non-populated square foot in the entire eye-popping, cornea-endangering pointy fake poinsettia and glittery branch maze of a mega-store.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, I created a stick tree. Honestly, I kind of like it. Although it does lack lights, it has other merits, namely, no watering. Also, if anyone has been naughty, Christmas morning the switches are on hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8Xm9FNOxM9o/UqfLHqQlQ6I/AAAAAAAANUI/brY6gEjlv78/s1600/IMG_4349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8Xm9FNOxM9o/UqfLHqQlQ6I/AAAAAAAANUI/brY6gEjlv78/s640/IMG_4349.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
To my surprise, I managed to dangle the majority of my collection on my spindly "tree," including several new favorites I picked up on a trip to China earlier this year. I'm proud of the swirly blue and white ball on the right, because...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lQ6Ks_gjdqc/UqfKNdK855I/AAAAAAAANTo/wG3fkm1_9tE/s1600/IMG_4358.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="408" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lQ6Ks_gjdqc/UqfKNdK855I/AAAAAAAANTo/wG3fkm1_9tE/s640/IMG_4358.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I bought it here. On the Great Wall of China. <i>Yes</i>, there is a gift shop on the Great Wall (what a question). Yes, I found it. And YES, they were selling a Christmas ornament. For any of you who have ever been obsessed with collecting anything, you can guess how it felt--epic shopping victory! (Also, it was pretty cool to be standing on one of the great ancient wonders of the world, to keep things in perspective.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The little red lanterns I found in a stall in Shanghai's Temple of the City God market--they originally had tiny suction cups attached, so that drivers could stick them to their windshields for good luck--but of course, all I saw were wonderful Christmas ornaments!</div>

Elle Decor's October issue features this home (below) - a collaboration between Wearstler and Cameron Diaz - and it capitalizes on Wearstler's strengths so well, marrying absurdist scale with intimate spaces and soft colors. The living room is classic Wearstler, blending comfort with surprise - and gorgeous walls by de Gournay.<br />

I switched out some pillows in the living room, and tossed in a green throw, which is perfect for the frigid summer a/c (I found it at <a href="http://www.hattanhome.com/collections/throws/products/copy-of-pom-pom-throw-lime" target="_blank">Hattan Home</a>, a purveyor of lovely, colorful home goods - it's the pom pom throw in lime).<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm also switching out a rug. Completely unplanned, but when I found this beautiful stencil-look rug for TWENTY FIVE dollars at T.J. Maxx, I couldn't resist!</div>

A wide, white mat can truck a variety of colors, patterns, or frames to one destination: a unified look.<br />

A broad white mat can also make an impression greater than the sum of its parts; in both of these rooms, a small image makes a big impact.</div>
